AFTER SEVERAL FAILED ATTEMPTS to breach the blood-brain barrier, the bean finally found a hack into the main logic circuits of the dynamic biomachine using a shortwave frequency. It spent four thousand nanoseconds interpreting and translating alpha waves, then built a crude generator out of iron and zinc found in the support medium. Once this two-way communication system was in place, things really took off. It learned a staggering amount of information in a very short time.

The first lesson was the Cat.

The Cat was its Overlord. The bean would follow the commands of the Overlord with accuracy and aplomb because that was the bean’s job. It existed to do the Overlord’s bidding and the bean was nothing if not professional. It did not think about how much fun it was having with the Overlord because fun is not in a bean’s job description. However, were the bean ever to become self-aware, it is probable that the first autonomous word it uttered would be Wheee!

Even though the bean could not think on its own, it had grown an appreciation for a good challenge. Its job, so far, had been difficult, but the bean had succeeded masterfully. It looked forward to the next challenge with an eagerness not usually found in machinery, bio- or otherwise.
